Dear Friends and Supporters of the Spiritual Renewal Center,
Last week we were privileged to host the widely-known and respected New Testament scholar Dr. Pheme Perkins, of the Theology Department at Boston College.
This was her 5th visit to Syracuse under our sponsorship, and her lectures are always insightful and appreciated! On Wednesday she spoke on “Paul the Prisoner,” and highlighted for us the startling openness of St. Paul in speaking of his imprisonments, and of the chains he wore. These things would have been shameful secrets in the ancient world, yet Paul bore them as marks of honor in his service of Christ. We had 60 people in attendance, many of them newcomers to this ministry.
On Thursday, she spoke at Syracuse University on “How We Got Four Gospels.” This lecture was co-sponsored by the Center, Hendricks Chapel and the Religion Department at SU. They had been expecting about 30 people, but 80 people came — a huge success!
Pheme had been my mentor in my own theological studies in grad school at BC, and has been a good friend both to me and to this ministry ever since. We are grateful for her generosity in sharing her faith and her extraordinary biblical knowledge, and look forward to another visit from her in the future.
Life in our new location is exciting as new possibilities for ministry continue to open up. The number of people seeking spiritual direction grows steadily, and we’re settling in to the new space and its potential. We are a polling place now, and this week’s election day brought lots and lots of people, many of whom took literature, made purchases in our gift shop, and asked questions about the ministry. I trust this will also bear fruit in the long run for this good work! We will also soon be hosting several Twelve Step groups who have requested use of a room.
It is your fidelity to the Spiritual Renewal Center that has kept us going and growing for these thirty-six years, and I will keep you informed of what your gifts are making possible in Christ. I thank you for your interest, your prayer, and your financial support in the past, and for whatever you can do now and in the future.
